Today is the 4th of Iyar, Yom Hazikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for the Fallen and Victims of Terror. It is a day of reflection and visiting the cemeteries for prayers. It is a time for us to remember all those who have fallen in defense of Israel and those whose lives have been cut short by the acts of terrorists. Israel remembers the 22, 437 who have fallen.
Israelis do not take this day very lightly. Many have fought in Israel's wars and have seen comrades or family members die. Many men and women carry the scars of the battles that they have seen.
On this day, flags are flown at half-mast, the names of those who died protecting Israel are read, visits are made to grave sites, and families remember those members of their family that are gone.
In memory of those who have fallen, would you take the time to say this prayer:
For the Welfare of the Soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces
May He who blessed our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, bless the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces who keep guard over our country and cities of our Lord from the border with Lebanon to the Egyptian desert and from the Mediterranean Sea to the approach to the Arava, be they on land, air or sea.
May the Almighty deliver us our enemies who arise against us, may the Holy One, blessed be He, preserve them and save them from all sorrow and peril, from danger and ill. May He send blessing and success in all their endeavors, may He deliver to them those who hate us and crown them with salvation and victory, so that the saying may be fulfilled through them, "For the Lord, your God, who walks with you and to fight your enemies for you and to save you", and let us say, Amen.
