It's a growing conflict between Western society and Islamic culture in America.A Muslim woman in Oregon has petitioned the city-run pools to provide women-only swim times.
Lul Abdulle's Islamic beliefs prohibit her from swimming in the presence of men.
The Somali Women's Association wants Portland to provide after-hours swim times and provide female lifeguards.
But the city says that would discriminate against men and other religions.
"We can't discriminate against religion; the other is we can't discriminate in favor of religion," Portland City Attorney Harry Auerbach said.
"It would essentially violate the rights of male lifeguards if we only hired female lifeguards for certain duty," he added.
The Muslim woman says everyone should have the right to exercise and good health.
Yes they have the right to exercise, but not to impose their cult on all of us. The added expense of female only lifeguards would be paid by the city of Portland and the US taxpayers. If Lul Abdulle doesn't like the fact that we live in a secular society, she and her fellow Muslims are free to leave it. There are planes leaving this nation for Muslim nations every day. I suggest that she put herself on one of them!

Everyone has a right to a religion of their choice. I don't judge. But this is truly ludicrous, and can't be permitted. It's unfair on so many levels and her excuse at the very end

while true, she is taking the whole conflict out of content. We have a right to a LOT of things in this country, but her basis here is incorrect.

And bravo to Portland City Attorney Harry Auerbach. Perhaps that is the legal key -- you can't discriminate against other religions or people EITHER.
We just can't roll over and take it like Britain is doing.
