The US Constitiution, Bill of Rights, and Amendments

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the United States. The Constitution is the framework for the organization of the United States government and for the relationship of the federal government with the states, citizens, and all people within the United States.

The Constitution creates the three branches of the national government: a legislature, the bicameral Congress; an executive branch led by the President; and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court. The Constitution specifies the powers and duties of each branch. The Constitution reserves all innumerated powers to the respective states and the people, thereby establishing the federal system of government.

The Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and ratified by conventions in each U.S. state in the name of "The People". The Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times; the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.

The Constitution holds a central place in United States law and political culture. The handwritten original document penned by Jacob Shallus is on display at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.

This is part of my Founding Documents series. The highlighted portions are of my doing.

You can find it here.

But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

Amendment 27 - Limiting Changes to Congressional Pay. Ratified 5/7/1992.

No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.
For a document written and ratified 223 years ago, it has served this nation exceedingly well. Yes we have had our bad times, bad Presidents, bad ideas;  but through it all, this nation not only endured, but thrived.

In reading this document, you get the sense of what our Founding Fathers intent and wishes were.  A government not dominated by one particular branch of this Republic, but working together for the good and on behest of the citizens of the United States.  The idea of men and women spending their lives in Congress would strike one as being not in their original intent.  They never conceived of the concept of "Lobbyists" or "Special Interest Groups".  If they had, they would very easily have included Term Limits for the Members of Congress.  An idea that is being suggested each year.

Our Constitution is a Living Document. It is not cast in stone and has been amended to rectify the mistakes of the past.

It is amazing that in its 223 years it has only been amended 27 times.  It is still even more amazing that we haven't chucked the whole thing out by now.

Perhaps the Founding Fathers really weren't the stupid idiots those on the left would have us believe.

In 2008, during the heat of the Presidential campaign, the idiots imbeciles at the Daily Kos, in an attempt to show what passes for wit and sophisticated humor published this picture:

It was not only in bad taste, but exposed the left for what we have known they are to be all along:  Children with no sense of morality or common sense.

The late Roger W. Gardner of Radarsite wrote this in response to this abomination:
My God. Can someone please explain this to me? Can anyone out there help me to understand how any American website, regardless of their political leanings, could find any justification, any justification whatsoever for publishing this cartoon? Can anyone describe for me the mentality of the British cartoonist who drew it? I won't waste my reader's valuable time waiting for answers. I do not want answers or explanations. But I will say this.

This is purportedly a Democratic, liberal website. If any Democrat or liberal out there does not immediately and passionately condemn this post, and condemn this vicious traitorous website and everything it stands for, if any Democrat or liberal out there does not at once disassociate themselves from this horror, then you are indeed the enemy, and I hate you as vehemently as I do al Qaeda. Perhaps even more vehemently, because you have the arrogance to consider yourselves to be Americans.

God help you. - rg
