Hurray for Washington!

Sunday night Michelle Obama had a first for any First Lady.  No she didn't learn proper table manners.  No she hasn't learned to dress properly.  Our dear First Lady presented the Oscar for Best Picture.  Surrounded by female soldiers, she told the world that Argo had won.  What joy!  See how low the office of First Lady has sunk.

The culmination of last night’s Oscars broadcast with a Live! feed from the White House with Mrs. Obama (hangin’ with her military BFs) marks the official recognition of the Presidency as theater: like the old Western sets, no substance required.

From the very beginning, President Obama was elected based on his strong delivery of stirring words, “Hope and change,” with no serious vetting of his record or policies. Having been awarded the presidency, as the Oscars follow the Golden Globes, Mr. Obama was next awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, solely for his well-scripted promises for peace.

And thus the facade continues: promising peace and delivering expanded war, with new frontiers broken for drone killings of children and other innocents, legal justifications crafted for killing Americans, and near-limitless executive power over nearly every aspect of our lives. Reciting the Progressive line while delivering impoverishment, decreased access and less-affordable healthcare, clearly it matters only what he says, not what is. His hoped-for next act: new goals of gun control that would make the most vulnerable more so, an increased minimum wage that would further exacerbate the inability of those with no work experience to get an entry-level job in which to hone the skills that will put them on the economic ladder, and “green” measures, based, like the Life of Pi, on computer-generated fantasy so much more appealing than dry real-world data.

But it’s OK. The Obamas make us feel good about ourselves, and, after all, that’s what Hollywood, er, Washington, is all about.

Of course, this didn’t start with this administration. Mr. Bush is still hailed a “conservative,” despite having perpetrated preemptive war based on an only-in-Washington scenario of mysterious WMDs, setting off the executive power avalanche that’s really rolling now, and quadrupling the size of the federal government.

But the trend certainly seems to be finding its culmination in the currently reigning stars of the White House—and it’s certainly not one that’s healthy for the ticket-paying audience.

Could you imagine what the reaction from the Lame Stream Media would have been if Laura Bush had tried such a stunt.  Just because Michelle Obama is the First Lady doesn't entitle her to the perks and privileges of a queen.  In fact she is not fit for such a role by her demonstration of manners (Or lack of them.) during the inaugural luncheon.  And just imagine we will have 3 more years of these antics to cope with.  G-d help us!

There are two fundamental mechanisms which any democratic system must have.

The first is a method that ensures "Majority Rule". Usually through the holding of fair elections.

The second is a mechanism which prevents the majority from using its power to violate the rights of the individual or of minorities.

Discussions of the current democratization process in Afghanistan and Iraq simply report on the number of votes cast. They tend to ignore the question of protection of the rights of individuals, minorities, or unpopular viewpoints. Missing the whole point of real democracy.

Afghanistan is preparing to hold their elections this week, Iraq is gearing up for their elections. This is suppose to be called Democracy because they hold multi-party elections. But in reality it isn't. While some things have gotten better, the reality is that women and minorities are still being treated as second-class citizens in both countries.

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan signed into law a bill that allows spousal rape. Women still have to wear the burka, and a new law is being proposed to implement full Shar'ia Law on the land, in the manner of Saudi Arabia. Now somone tell me why we are there defending this?

In Iraq, Christians, Baha'i, Homosexuals, and Jews (there is only 1 left) are persecuted, imprisoned, raped beaten and murdered. And I am asking myself why did we go, was it worth all of the American deaths, and should we just leave the land since they are proving themselves to be barbarians.

Do not call either nation a Democracy. They haven't earned the name yet. Until they start treating women and minorities with equal rights and respect, then they have no right to ever be considered worthy of that title.

How to properly rig an election.

This simple primer is being written for the Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Hoseyni Khāmene’i and other despots. These are 6 very simple rules to follow, and in following them you are assured of continued power in your nation:

1. Invite any person, male or female, to run for the Presidency.

In doing this you signal to the world that your elections are fair and open to all viewpoints. You, the kind despot, know in advanced that these other candidates don't have a snowballs chance in Hell of winning, but to the world and your people, they will see you as a vehicle for change.

2. Hold open debates.

Let the candidates promise the people everything under the sky. You know that once the election is over, and your candidate has won the day, you can crack down hard on these reformers and dissents. That is why you have your penal system for. This is also a good way to discover those citizens of yours that are working behind the scenes to bring down your regime.

3. Make sure your elections truly are fair and honest.

It is not the work of the polls that you have to be concerned with, but with the counting of the ballots afterward. So you need not have any of your goons at the election polls. You already know the outcome of this election.

If you are to use an electronic system, make sure that the machines are rigged in advanced. There is plenty of good software available to insure your preferred outcome when doing this.

If you are to use a paper ballot, then don't do anything. But have plenty of extra ballots with your candidate's name already marked on them and a good shredder standing by.

4. Make sure you control the counting of the ballots.

If using an electronic method, remember to install the software to rig the election before election day. And remember to remove it after the election. That way if anyone was to examine the machines, they would be normal.

If using the paper ballot method, count away, but choose every other vote for the opposition to your candidate for destruction (paper shredder) and replace with ballots for your candidate. Do this slowly and carefully. You might want to burn the shreds while doing this.

5. Don't announce the winner right away.

Even if you are using an electronic system, take your time in announcing the outcome. By giving out the results right away, without a full count of the votes, you play your hand in showing your nation and the world that the election was rigged. By taking hours, or even better days to announce the winner, your nation will believe that the vote was fair and the winner (your preferred candidate) was truly elected.

6. When the winner is announced, don't let it be by a landslide.

Unless it actually happens that way (and the odds are against that), announce that your preferred candidate won by a slim majority. This will legitimize the election in the eyes of the opposition and world, and keep the useful monkey you have chosen loyal to you. If you announce a large landslide, your monkey will begin to plot against you (something you do not want to happen) and the opposition will know that everything is rigged.

Those are the 6 simple rules to insuring that your next election runs smooth and flawless. Once you have finished this exercise in futility, you will be free to return to the actual work your nation has been doing: Creating a nuclear weapon, promoting terrorism in the world, and persecuting those who you don't like. And of course the usual and exciting insitment of hatred towards the Great Satan and Little Satan respectively.

Elections in the Air

Finally an election result that I can shout about!

The Jewish state's national bird is the hoopoe (duchifat in Hebrew), after being chosen in a national election process that stretched over six months, and which was initiated by the Society for Protection of Nature. The winner was declared by President Shimon Peres, whose own last name refers to a vulture.

The hoopoe, a crested bird with a unique appearance which is mentioned in Jewish legends about King Shlomo (Solomon) and the Queen of Sheba, is common throughout Israel. According to legend, the hoopoe is capable of cutting through stone, and is referred to as "nakar turia," or mountain chiseler, in the Talmud. Legend also has it that when its beak breaks, the hoopoe can continue chiseling through rocks with its folded crest - hence its name duchifat, which means "two beaks" in Aramaic. Ethiopian Jews called it the "Moses Bird" and believed it would carry them to Jerusalem one day.

The hoopoe is unafraid of human beings, but when in danger, it makes a hissing sound and secretes a foul-smelling liquid. Its friendly nature may have been the deciding factor in the elections: the final vote tally shows it far ahead of the competition, in what some analysts say is the result of generations of "campaigning" in which it wandered alongside Israeli children on innumerable footpaths.

It is a beautiful bird, a favorite of children, and it was children that cast the majority of votes in this election.

There is a legend about the Hoopoe and King Solomon. In the legend while Solomon was traveling, a flock of Hoopoe gave the king shade. It explains how the Hoopoe received its crest and shows the wisdom and generosity of King Solomon. Although a children's story, it has its charm.

The bird too has its charm. And like the moral of the story:

Throughout the land they lived in peace and no one made them afraid.

Just like the people of Israel today.
